Build on Athletics. GSU has Tennis courts that can be restored or rebuilt to give the school Men’s and Women’s Tennis. There is already a Cross Country Team so why not add Track and Field? Use the terrible soccer field and build a new one with a track around it. Build a new Dorm Building and chop down those weeds where Paul stands and turn it into a quad (something the school is missing) Career Services need to help more and there should be a manditory meeting once a year so students can get an idea of what they want to major in but also what kind of job they want.
Over my past 8 years at GSU, one significant goal that might be considered and applied across all existing goals, is legacy. In my observations and in listening to long-time faculty/staff, we tend to lose meaningful initiatives when someone retires, leaves the university, or simply suffers from burn-out. I see elements of this observation noted across these boards. So, this is a goal that would mean doing more with less. However, a goal of developing a framework for recognizing initiative life span and working towards sustaining short-term and longer-term objectives appropriately, means we could revitalize a culture of innovation. This would mean applying project management practices and understanding that there are research & development leaders and those leaders who manage initiatives after they are developed. We need both to build legacy.
More than a new goal what we need are two things: a new leadership and a new strategy. More of the same is going to get us only more of the same. Only a fool keeps on doing the same thing and expecting to get a different result. 50 years ago this was an innovative institution. Today, it is exactly the opposite. Where did we lose our north?
Institutional Excellence in Diversity and Equity
– Establish an institutional unit in charge of assessing, communicating, and promoting institutional diversity and equity for all aspects of GSU, including hiring, student recruitment, student and staff relations, and community engagements.
– Define diversity and equity in the primary contexts of institutional operations, setting, and services.
– Generate a diversity and equity strategic plan with measurable and time-bound goals and objectives.
– Issue a scorecard report on GSU’s efforts towards meeting its defined diversity and equity goals, and on how the institutional actions and organizational climate contribute towards diversity and equity.
– Create and sustain diversity and equity awareness through curricular changes, developmental workshops, research, and publications.
Note: In this goal, inclusiveness is a component of equity. However, it can be included and spelled out to add clarity.
Public/Private Initiatives as a source of revenue for the university.
As I review GSU’s “Core Values” of 1) Student Success, 2) Opportunity and Access, 3) Economic Catalyst, 4) Stewards of the Future, 5) Inclusiveness and Diversity, 5) Quality of Life, all have an associated goal expect Inclusiveness and Diversity. I would strongly suggest adding a goal around this core value for Strategy 2025.
